Fire Extinguishers and Fire Starters: Anarchist Interventions in the Spanish Revolution (The Plaza Occupation Revolution in Barcelona)

Posted in General, Newsletter/e-Zine Catalog on October 24, 2011 by Prometheus StarG(A)zer

In May, a new movement spread across Spain and elsewhere around the world, with crowds occupying public spaces in an attempt to formulate a new resistance to the effects of capitalist crisis and austerity measures. We are excited to present Fire Extinguishers and Fire Starters: Anarchist Interventions in the #Spanish Revolution, a full report from a comrade on the ground in Barcelona as published by CrimethInc Collective. This report chronicles the trajectory of the movement and offers a critical analysis of the potential and limitations of the forms it assumed.

Dear Occupiers: A Letter from Anarchists (published by CrimethInc Collective)

Posted in General, Newsletter/e-Zine Catalog on October 24, 2011 by Prometheus StarG(A)zer

Starting with the occupation of a park next to Wall Street on September 17, a new movement is spreading across the country in which people gather in public spaces in protest against social inequalities. We’ll present a full analysis of this phenomenon here shortly; in the meantime, here’s an open letter to the occupation movement, engaging with some of the issues that have arisen thus far. Please forward this widely and print out versions to distribute at the “Occupy” events!

You can find the full letter here (check out other CWC stuff too!)

On The Question of Free Markets, Leftism, and MiMu.

Posted in Radical Economics on September 24, 2011 by Prometheus StarG(A)zer

Many have asked after the posting of Why Not To Trust Your School and some of our Films whether or not we are anti-capitalist or pro-market anarchists. We have even (warmly and gratefully) received a review on this note from Nick Ford here (great blog). I always respond with, “we are explicitly individualist”. The truth of the matter is we do not distinguish, we publish mostly individualist and nonpolitical libertarian/non-ideological anarchist texts and media but every editor and contributor takes a different slant-from revolutionary agorist to anarcho-communist and everything between. I suppose one would refer to us as ranging from post to anti-left anarchist. We want to offer an online place for individuals to be inspired by the audacity and creative revolt of every tendency of anarchism and libertarianism. I’ll tell you this, as de facto “editor-in-chief”  of Mischief and Mutiny I do not discriminate but personally I am a self-proclaimed non-ideological “Thoreau-vian” libertarian/voluntarist and a proponent of voluntary counter-economics but as a new-ish e-journal most work submitted is either nonaligned or anti-capitalist but I don’t think anything has been explicitly anti-free market and as the agorist philosophers and activists Samuel E. Konkin III and Joseph Neil Schulman have suggested, “capitalism” (to an agorist) implies the merger of state and private interests in spite of the disastrous effect on individual liberty in fact,with the intention to suppress it. May be splitting hairs but either way, I hope this clears things up for those of you who were concerned.

Anarcho-survivalism?

An anti-civ anarchist primer on the survivalist movement.

By StarG(A)zer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I recently picked up a copy of The Backwoodsman, a magazine dedicated to the overarching theme of self-sufficiency which has been a big focus in my own life. It’s contents range from information, ads, and articles on survivalism and homesteading to old world primitive craftsmanship and American frontier history. It is a great resource to have available and it’s focus is never very political, but I read up on the history of the publication and others like it and it got me thinking.
As I sit here writing this Wall Street is being occupied and there is a nationwide CorpGov. media blackout of the whole thing, rioting and insurrection is breaking out globally, and economic and political stability is plunging rapidly beyond a point of no return. Now do I really need to find sources and polls and statistics or am I right in assuming an open-minded semi-observant person can realize what is happening?
As a wilderness and primitive skills enthusiast and something of a “survivalist” I see this as A) Disturbing B) An opportunity to wake others up about preparedness and C) A chance to look deeper into the relationship between survivalism, politics, and anarchism. I find it increasingly depressing that the survivalist movement is dominated by Christian fundamentalism, the racist “patriot” movement, and right-wing militias. The word survivalism has come to denote some form of anti-tax, anti-immigrant ultraconservative militia ideology. Forget this and we can move on.
To me, survivalism is not just being prepared for revolution, insurrection, natural disasters, and the like but enriching and strengthening oneself as an individual by learning old world skills and reconnecting with the primitive and natural world outside of the exploitation and mindlessness of modern techno-industrial civilization. Anarcho-survivalism is a form of individualist primitivism, wishing to revert to a simpler life, rewild, but to do it rationally and on an individual basis, free from the encumbered feeling of a label or specific ideology and platform and free from the political bullshit.
Anarcho-survivalism is not an ideology, it is the experiential philosophy of the freedom of self-sufficiency, the natural incarnation of “individualism.”
Happy Camping and check back for more articles, pubs, and media on primitive skills, anarcho-survivalism, self-sufficiency in vagrancy, primitivism, homesteading, and much more-This was just a primer!
